NACA Reports About 45,000 New HIV Infections In Nigeria In 2025
Nigeria’s fight against HIV/AIDS remains an ongoing battle, with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) confirming that the country recorded approximately 45,000 new HIV infections last year.
What NACA Actually Said
Speaking publicly, NACA Director-General Dr. Temitope Ilori disclosed that Nigeria recorded about 45,000 new HIV infections in 2025, while data for the current year is still being collated. She was clear that while prevention and treatment options remain effective, no cure for HIV currently exists reinforcing the importance of consistent prevention efforts across the country.
Ilori also highlighted encouraging progress in one specific area: uptake of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a preventive medication for people at higher risk of contracting HIV, which she said has been particularly well received among key populations and other groups considered more vulnerable to infection. She was careful to clarify, however, that PrEP isn’t intended for every Nigerian, but specifically for those at genuinely elevated risk.
