Receipts Confirmed: Mayorkun Finally Receives The Cybertruck Davido Promised Him
After weeks of online skepticism and accusations that the whole thing might have been staged, Mayorkun has finally been spotted with the actual Tesla Cybertruck Davido promised him back in July putting to rest one of the more entertaining controversies Afrobeats Twitter has seen this year.
How This All Started
Back in late July, Davido took to his Instagram Story to surprise his former DMW signee with what appeared to be a brand-new Tesla Cybertruck, writing simply: “My gift to you. I love you @iammayorkun cc @babzii_chilling pls have it delivered 2moro.” Mayorkun responded with equal warmth, reposting the message with the caption “Love 4L, 001” a nod to Davido’s popular nickname and their long-running bond. The Cybertruck itself retails between roughly $69,990 and $99,990 in the US, placing its naira value well into the hundreds of millions depending on configuration and import costs.
Then Came The Pinterest Controversy
What should have been a straightforward heartwarming gesture quickly spiralled into a full-blown social media investigation. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the exact image Davido posted matched a photo originally published back in 2023 by design outlet Dezeen, in an article about the Cybertruck’s initial launch. Critics pounced immediately, accusing Davido of essentially pulling a stock photo off Pinterest and passing it off as a personal gift with some going as far as suggesting the entire gesture was a publicity stunt timed around his upcoming album. One widely shared comment mocked the situation directly, questioning why Davido would need to “chase clout” with a fake picture, while a popular blog account joined in asking pointedly when the singer would stop the theatrics.
The backlash was loud enough that it briefly overshadowed the generosity of the gesture entirely, turning a feel-good celebrity friendship moment into a full-blown credibility debate.
The Real Delivery Settles The Debate
Fast forward to now, and the skepticism appears to have been premature. New footage and photos show Mayorkun posing directly with an actual, physical Cybertruck seemingly the very vehicle Davido promised weeks earlier putting the Pinterest allegations to rest and confirming the gift was genuine all along, even if the original announcement photo happened to be a generic promotional image rather than one taken of the specific unit.
A Bond That Goes Back Nearly A Decade
This latest gesture is just the newest chapter in a friendship that dates back to 2016, when Davido discovered a cover video Mayorkun had posted online while working a bank job he was already preparing to resign from. Davido reached out the very same day Mayorkun submitted his resignation letter, signed him to DMW, and helped launch his career with the hit single “Eleko.” Mayorkun went on to release his debut album, The Mayor Of Lagos, under the label before eventually departing DMW in 2021 to pursue an independent career a split that, unlike some other DMW exits, never soured the relationship between the two men, who’ve continued publicly celebrating each other ever since.
Wahala Network Take
From accusations of a Pinterest-sourced publicity stunt to an actual Cybertruck sitting in Mayorkun’s possession, this story had a genuinely satisfying resolution. Say what you want about Davido’s sometimes chaotic announcement style, but when it comes to taking care of the people who’ve been loyal to him, the receipts literally, this time don’t lie.
