Manchester United’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, has quit his role at the Premier League club on Sunday after just five months.
Ashworth oversaw transfer spending of over £200 million during the summer window.
It included the transfers of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Light and Noussair Mazraoui.
The 53-year-old was responsible for football performance and recruitment, reporting to new CEO Omar Berrada, who was hired from Manchester City.
“Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.
“We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during this transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future,” the club statement read.
Ashworth’s exit has led to varying reactions from fans.
@IceMan05050 was left perplexed by the decision of the United board, as he believes they opted to keep former manager Erik ten Hag and to work together, saying, “I believe Omar Berrada said the decision to keep Ten Hag was made before he & Ashworth joined & began working.”
In @Cheeemz’s opinion, the early signs were there that Ashworth was not the right man for the job. He said: “INEOS should have clocked Ashworth when he used his Newcastle email to accidentally put them onto the fact he was on the way out. That’s not a serious person.”
According to @mantonn, there are more important decisions to be made in the United hierarchy. He wrote: “The idea that Roche is still there and Dan Ashworth isn’t tells you everything.
“Journos don’t experience the horrors of attending the match or the Kafkaesque ticketing system so you don’t report about it.
“If United ran an airline, I would never get on any of the planes.”
