I’ve given up on my dream of becoming a manager – John Terry

Chelsea icon John Terry has revealed he has officially let go of his long-held ambition to become a first-team coach, citing frustration over a lack of opportunities since retiring from professional football.

The 44-year-old, who captained the Blues to 17 major trophies during an illustrious playing career, transitioned into coaching after hanging up his boots. He served as Dean Smith’s assistant at Aston Villa, helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League.

When Terry left Villa in the summer of 2021, many expected him to take up a head coach role. However, despite being linked with several managerial positions, no concrete offers materialized.

Now working as a part-time coaching consultant in Chelsea’s academy, Terry says he is content passing on his experience to the next generation rather than chasing first-team management roles.

“I’m done in terms of coaching. I’m enjoying my life, I’m working in the Chelsea academy,” he told The Sun. “My role’s part-time, I love working with the kids, I love passing on my knowledge and experience to those boys. I went for a couple of jobs and those days are gone for me.”
