‘I have never won a trophy’ – Eric Chelle reveals what Super Eagles stars told him during AFCON 2025
Super Eagles manager, Eric Chelle has disclosed the heartfelt discussion he had with his players prior to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, revealing how the squad united in support of him following the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Malian coach shared his thoughts after Nigeria secured a 2-0 win against Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup tournament held in London on Tuesday.
He reflected on the letdown of not qualifying for the World Cup and emphasized the team’s resolve to restore national pride at the AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Ultimately, Nigeria secured third place in the continental tournament by overcoming Egypt in a penalty shootout during the third-place playoff.
Discussing the atmosphere within the team leading up to the biennial tournament, Chelle acknowledged that both the players and coaching staff faced significant pressure following the World Cup qualifying setback.
Chelle also recounted a poignant moment with the players, who assured him of their unwavering support despite the surrounding pressure on the national team.
He said, “For me, it is difficult because at this moment I have never won a trophy. These players took my hand and said, ‘Coach, we should go together. We are ready to die with you and if something happens, we go together, if we win, we win together, if we lose, we lose together’”.
Chelle further noted that the trust and solidarity within the squad were crucial in helping the team manage expectations throughout the tournament.
“I am extremely grateful for the trust they have placed in me; you can see that they endure a lot of pressure during the AFCON and the reality of the situation.”
