EPL: Carragher Reveals Why Liverpool Could Struggle to Defend Title Despite 4-2 Win

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed doubts about the Reds’ chances of defending their Premier League title, citing defensive vulnerabilities despite their 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in the season opener.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Friday night’s clash at Anfield, Carragher praised Liverpool’s attacking prowess but warned that their openness at the back could prove costly.

Hugo Ekitike made an impressive debut, scoring the opener before setting up Cody Gakpo early in the second half to double the lead. Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, who was racially abused in the first half, responded with two goals, including a brilliant solo strike, to level the score.

Liverpool regained control when substitute Federico Chiesa bundled in a third, and Mohamed Salah extended his remarkable record of scoring on every Premier League opening day with a late goal.

Carragher, however, remained cautious:

“Liverpool will score a lot and concede a lot too. They might be the most entertaining side in the league, but if they play like that, it’ll be hard to retain their crown. They’re far too open and vulnerable to counter-attacks, it’s something that needs fixing.”
