Court orders DNA test on Mohbad’s son Liam in legal win for singer’s father

A Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has ordered a DNA test to determine the paternity of Liam Aloba, the son of late singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The ruling was delivered on Tuesday, September 1, 2025, by Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga, following an application filed by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba. Joseph requested the test to conclusively establish whether Liam is his biological grandson.
As part of the order, the court directed the Chief Medical Officer or Pathologist at the Military Hospital, Yaba, where Mohbad’s remains are preserved, to extract tissue, hair, or other necessary samples for testing.
Representing Joseph Aloba, lawyer Augustine Adegbemi argued that confirming the child’s paternity is crucial due to its implications on Liam’s welfare and the mother’s maintenance obligations.
Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, through her lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, did not object to the application, prompting the court to grant the request without opposition.
The court also issued the following directives:
Two separate DNA tests must be conducted, one within Nigeria and another outside the country, at accredited and recognized hospitals.
Both parties or their representatives must be present during the sample collection.
The case has been adjourned to November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.
The paternity of Mohbad’s son has been a subject of public debate since the singer’s death in 2023. Joseph Aloba has consistently demanded a DNA test, sparking controversy and heated discussions online.
Last year, a court granted permission to serve Omowunmi notice of the pending application after initial attempts failed. The court then ordered that the documents be posted at her last known address.
In January, Omowunmi’s legal team accused Joseph Aloba of deliberately delaying the test while publicly defaming her and tarnishing Liam’s reputation by suggesting the child was illegitimate. Her lawyers demanded an apology, stating that Joseph’s actions amounted to slander.
With this latest court order, the long-standing dispute is set to move closer to resolution.
