CAS Upholds UEFA’s Ruling, Demotes Crystal Palace to Conference League

In a major European football development, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld UEFA’s decision demoting Crystal Palace from the Europa League to the UEFA Conference League for the 2025–26 season. The verdict, delivered following an expedited appeal hearing, brings to an end a contentious saga over compliance with multi-club ownership regulations.

What Happened

Crystal Palace qualified for the Europa League by winning their first-ever major trophy—the FA Cup. However, UEFA ruled their participation violated multi-club ownership rules because American businessman John Textor held stakes in both Palace and Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon), another Europa League qualifier. Despite his attempt to sell his Palace shares, the sale occurred after UEFA’s March 1 deadline, rendering the club in breach of regulations.

CAS Verdict

At a closed-door hearing held on August 8, CAS reviewed the evidence before issuing its ruling today. The panel confirmed that Textor had “decisive influence” over both clubs at the time of UEFA’s assessment and dismissed Palace’s arguments of unfair treatment. The ruling stands: Palace will compete in the Conference League, while Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League, will take their Europa League spot.

Crystal Palace Reacts

Club officials, led by chairman Steve Parish, have vocally condemned the decision. Parish labeled it one of the greatest injustices in football history and expressed profound disappointment for players, supporters, and staff. He emphasized the emotional and financial ramifications of missing out on a major European competition.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson also weighed in, warning the demotion “would devalue the competition” and insisting the team earned their Europa League place on merit following an FA Cup triumph and Community Shield win.

Financial & Competitive Impact

The demotion is expected to cost the club significantly. Estimates suggest a revenue shortfall of up to £20–£25 million, highlighting the commercial consequences of falling short under UEFA’s rules.

On the pitch, Crystal Palace will now enter the competition at the Conference League play-off round, facing either Fredrikstad or Midtjylland to secure a place in the group stage.

The ruling underscores the rigid enforcement of multi-club ownership regulations—and the high stakes for clubs caught on the wrong side of compliance.
