“Leaving Was Premature, I Only Realized It Afterwards” – Reekado Banks Reflects on Departure From Mavin

Veteran Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has offered fresh insight into his decision to leave Mavin Records back in 2018, admitting in a recent interview that the exit may have come too early in his career.

Speaking on The Esther Oye Show, the 31-year-old artist shared that remaining longer with the powerhouse label would likely have left him feeling dependent and less accountable for his career outcomes.

“I do not think I would have gathered as much knowledge as I have now… I would feel entitled to certain successes… I would blame it on the label,” Reekado reflected, stressing that independence taught him accountability and self-reliance. TheCable Lifestyle

Having left the label, Reekado explored various business ventures and partnerships—some of which failed—but ultimately credited these early experiences with helping him stand firmly on his own feet.

Reekado’s exit from Mavin was amicable. In past interviews, he emphasized that Don Jazzy gave him his blessings, even as he pursued independence.

His departure formally came after his contract expired in 2018, closing a memorable chapter defined by hit singles and strong mentorship under Don Jazzy.

Since launching his own initiative, the singer says he now fully appreciates the structure and support Mavin provided. Guidance under the label helped shape him, but independence helped define him.

His recent comments reveal a growing confidence that his biggest learning curve—and creative control—came after stepping out on his own.
