No More Free Money For ‘Banger Boys’: Elon Musk Pulls The Plug On X’s Repost Economy
If your entire X hustle has been reposting other people’s memes and reused videos for engagement coins, we’ve got bad news for you, Elon Musk just pulled the plug on that whole business model.
What Exactly Is Changing?
X is officially ending its Creator Revenue Sharing Program and replacing it with a new Original Content Rewards Program. The platform’s creator account, @XCreators, confirmed the shift, with the switch taking effect starting August 7, 2026.
Here’s the transition timeline: the old Revenue Sharing Program is no longer accepting new creators, though anyone already enrolled keeps earning under it until September 7, 2026. Existing members will get paid out on August 14 and August 28, with a final payment for anything earned up to September 7 landing around September 11. After that, applications for the new Original Content Rewards Program open to eligible creators starting September 8.
So Why Are The “Banger Boys” Finished?
This is the part that matters for the reposting economy. X made it explicitly clear that simply reposting someone else’s content will no longer be considered enough to earn building on existing conversations is still core to the platform, but original contribution is now the actual requirement.
The platform laid out exactly what counts going forward. Qualifying original content can include threads, videos, memes, graphics, illustrations, reporting, analysis, commentary and reactions but only if they add real, meaningful value to the conversation. If you’re reworking someone else’s post or clip, you now need to add genuine commentary, context, analysis, humour, or creative transformation for it to qualify at all.
And before anyone tries to get clever with light editing, X shut that down too: basic tweaks like cropping, filters, borders, watermarks, speed changes or simple text overlays won’t count as “meaningful transformation” on their own. In short cropping a viral clip and slapping your watermark on it, which has basically been the entire business model for a chunk of X’s “banger” accounts, is no longer a payday.
New Program, New Rules
Getting into Original Content Rewards isn’t automatic either. Creators need an active X Premium subscription, at least 500 verified followers, and 500,000 verified impressions in the last 90 days to be eligible. On top of that, qualifying content has to be personally created and actually viewed by Premium users on the Home Timeline reposts, minimally edited content, and “noted” posts are excluded entirely.
X’s own messaging around the shake-up was blunt about why this had to happen. The company said Revenue Sharing had reached a point where the incentives were misaligned, and that creators should be focused on bringing genuinely new content to the platform rather than chasing maximum payouts.

For years, X’s old rev-share program turned “repost and caption” into an actual side hustle for plenty of accounts and now Elon has basically said “not anymore.” If your content strategy has been living off other people’s bangers, it’s time to either start creating originals or watch your bag disappear come September 7. The reposting gravy train has officially left the station.
