End Of An Era: Tony Elumelu Officially Retires As UBA Group Chairman After 12 Years

After more than a decade steering one of Africa’s largest banking institutions, Tony Elumelu has officially stepped down as Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), with his retirement taking effect on August 21, 2026 marking the end of a genuinely transformative chapter in the bank’s history.

Why He’s Retiring Now

Elumelu’s retirement follows the completion of the maximum 12-year tenure for non-executive directors as stipulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria. This falls in line with the CBN’s revised Code of Corporate Governance for banks and financial holding companies, introduced in July 2023, which prescribes a maximum tenure of 12 years for non-executive directors and chief executive officers across the banking industry a rule specifically designed to prevent entrenched board leadership and ensure regular renewal at the top. In other words, this wasn’t a resignation driven by controversy or pressure; it’s simply regulatory clockwork playing out exactly as intended.
UBA’s Board accepted Elumelu’s retirement at a meeting held on July 6, 2026, and elected Emmanuel N. Nnorom, a long-serving Non-Executive Director, as his successor, effective the same August 21 date.

The Scale Of What He Built

Under Elumelu’s leadership as chairman, UBA expanded its operations to 20 African countries and four global financial centres, growing its customer base to over 50 million people across the continent. That international footprint specifically spans the USA, UK, France and UAE, alongside UBA’s extensive African network. UBA described his tenure as a defining chapter in the group’s history, crediting him with transforming what was once primarily a Nigerian institution into a genuinely pan-African financial group.

His Own Words On Leaving

Reflecting on his departure, Elumelu said serving United Bank for Africa had been one of the great privileges of his career, adding that UBA had established a unique competitive position across Africa and globally, and that he was leaving the board with great confidence in the bank’s future. He also offered his full backing to his successor, describing Nnorom as a leader of integrity, experience and sound judgement, and expressing confidence the bank would continue to thrive under his leadership.
Nnorom, for his part, is a chartered accountant with over forty years of experience in banking, finance and audit. Responding to his new appointment, <cite index=”10-1″>he said he was honoured by the trust the Board had placed in him and deeply conscious of the legacy he now inherits, adding that he looked forward to working with colleagues across the Board, Management, and staff in all of UBA’s markets to sustain the bank’s momentum.

This Isn’t Elumelu Stepping Away From Business

It’s worth being clear about what this retirement actually means. Elumelu is not retiring from business altogether he will continue leading Heirs Holdings, Transcorp Plc, and the Tony Elumelu Foundation. Beyond banking, his influence continues to be felt through his “Africapitalism” philosophy, and through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which has supported thousands of young African entrepreneurs.

Wahala Network Take

For a man who’s spent the past week trending online over a viral clip about how a young trainee should address him, this quieter, far more significant piece of news is a reminder of just how consequential his actual professional legacy has been twelve years spent turning a domestic Nigerian bank into a genuine pan-African financial powerhouse serving over 50 million people. Whatever people think of Tony as a public figure, there’s no denying the scale of what he leaves behind at UBA.
