When the Headies organizers released the nominee list for their 18th edition, FOLA emerged with a staggering 10 nominations the most of any artist this year, ahead of Omah Lay’s 8, Wizkid and Mavo’s 7 apiece, and Davido and Asake’s 6 each. Even bigger names with longer résumés simply couldn’t match his spread across categories this time around.
And this na no small categories o. FOLA is up for Best Recording of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Best R&B Album, Best Collaboration, Afrobeats Single of the Year, Headies Viewer’s Choice, Album of the Year, Digital Artiste of the Year, Next Rated, and Best Male Artiste. That’s basically a full sweep across the board — commercial categories, craft categories, breakout categories, all of them recognizing one man’s work.
The ceremony itself is set to hold on October 23, 2026, in Toronto, Canada, under the theme “Africa to the World,” and if the nomination list is anything to go by, FOLA might just be walking away as one of the biggest storylines of the night.
But Who Even Is FOLA?
For those just catching up, FOLA real name Afolarin Odunlami is not some overnight miracle. Born in Ibadan, Oyo State, he actually started out chasing a completely different dream: football. Music eventually pulled him in, and after years of quietly perfecting his sound, his 2022 single “Ginger Me” featuring Bella Shmurda gave Nigerians their first real taste of what he could do, eventually earning him a signing to Bella Shmurda’s Dangbana Republik imprint.
From there, FOLA built steadily rather than chasing a single viral moment. His 2024 single “Alone” featuring Bhadboi OML became a genuine breakout hit, climbing onto Billboard’s Afrobeats chart, and it set the stage for his debut EP, “what a feeling,” released later that same year.
Then came the real statement: his debut studio album “catharsis,” released on September 4, 2025. Described by critics as a deeply personal, introspective body of work blending Afrobeats with R&B and street-pop, the 11-track project featured heavyweight collaborators like Kizz Daniel, Victony, and Young Jonn, and quickly climbed to number one on Nigeria’s TurnTable album chart. One reviewer for The Upper Entertainment called it an imperfect but brilliant debut that expanded Afrobeats’ emotional range and clearly, the Headies committee agrees, handing “catharsis” nominations for both Album of the Year and Best R&B Album.
From Dangbana Signee To Headies Frontrunner
What makes FOLA’s rise particularly sweet is the timeline. This is a man who, not too long ago, was simply “Bella Shmurda’s new signee” a promising name attached to a bigger star for credibility. Fast forward to 2026, and he’s the one leading the most respected music awards conversation in Nigeria, standing shoulder to shoulder — and in nomination count, above artists who’ve been dominating Afrobeats for over a decade.
