Messi Just Shut Down Barcelona Fans in One Word — Thiago Is NOT Going to La Masia
Barcelona fans, we’re sorry to be the ones to break your heart today. That trending story about Thiago Messi finally following in his father’s footsteps and joining La Masia? Straight from Leo’s own mouth: it’s not happening.
What Really Happen?
Rumours had been flying around social media for days, hyped up by the fact that Thiago is about to turn 14 the age Spanish academies typically move players into a new federated category, which fed speculation that a “homecoming” move to Barcelona could be in the works.
But before Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup opener against Atlético San Luis, journalist Bruno Vain caught up with Messi as he walked into the stadium alongside teammate Rodrigo De Paul and asked him point blank: “Is Thiaguito leaving?” Without even breaking stride, Messi gave a one-word answer that ended the entire saga on the spot: “No.”
That’s it. No elaboration, no diplomatic dodge just a flat denial, delivered mid-walk like it was the easiest question he’d been asked all week.
So Why Did People Even Think Thiago Was Leaving?
It’s not completely out of nowhere. Thiago actually does have Barcelona history he spent time in the Barça Escola between 2016 and 2019, back when his dad was still tearing up La Liga in Blaugrana colours. After Messi’s emotional 2021 exit from Barcelona, Thiago briefly passed through PSG’s youth setup before the family settled in Florida, where he’s been developing in Inter Miami’s academy since 2023.
Given that lineage plus his approaching 14th birthday it’s easy to see why the rumour mill ran wild. But according to Messi, Thiago’s future is staying firmly on American soil for now.
What Kind of Player Is Thiago Turning Into?
Interestingly, Messi has said Thiago isn’t shaping up to be a carbon copy of his old man on the pitch. He’s described his son as more of a thinker and organiser, a true midfielder rather than the explosive attacker Messi built his legend as. That distinct profile is part of why the family seems content letting him develop his own game at Inter Miami rather than uprooting him for a Barcelona academy path.
Wahala Network Take
Barcelona faithful were already dreaming of a Messi legacy return through the back door, but Leo just closed that chapter before it even opened. For now, Thiago’s story is being written in Fort Lauderdale, not Catalonia and judging by how fast Messi shut the question down, that doesn’t look like it’s changing anytime soon.
