FIFA has immortalised Asisat Oshoala’s outstanding performance at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, describing her seven-goal haul as one of the tournament’s defining individual campaigns, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The world football governing body, in a feature published on its website, recalled how the Nigerian forward announced herself on the global stage at the tournament, where she claimed both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball following a string of impressive displays.
Oshoala started the tournament slowly, scoring just once in the group stages, before hitting top form in the knockout rounds netting twice against New Zealand in the quarter-final and four times against DPR Korea in the semi-final.
Nigeria ultimately lost 1-0 to Germany in the final, but Oshoala’s individual brilliance left a lasting mark on the competition.
Her seven goals placed her fourth on the list of highest scorers in a single edition of the tournament, level with Korea DPR’s Kim Un-Hwa, while Christine Sinclair and Alexandra Popp jointly hold the record with 10 goals apiece, scored in 2002 and 2010 respectively. Oshoala remains the only African player to have won the tournament’s Golden Boot.
A Springboard for Her Career
FIFA noted that the Canada 2014 campaign served as a launchpad for Oshoala’s career.
She won her first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title with Nigeria two months later, before earning a maiden call-up to the senior Women’s World Cup at Canada 2015, where she scored in a 3-3 draw with Sweden.
She further cemented her reputation at France 2019 with a memorable goal against the Republic of Korea, helping Nigeria reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 1999. She later became the first African player to score in three different editions of the tournament, following her goal against co-hosts Australia in 2023.
She missed out on a fourth World Cup appearance after Nigeria failed to qualify for Brazil 2027.
A Decorated Career
Now 31, Oshoala has gone on to become one of the most decorated African footballers in history, with six African Women’s Footballer of the Year awards and four WAFCON titles to her name.
She has had spells with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chinese side Dalian Quanjian, Barcelona and Bay FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, and currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. She has scored 40 goals in 74 appearances for the Nigeria senior team.
