BREAKING NEWS: FG declares Tuesday public holiday for Eid ul Mawlid

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Eid-ul-Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The holiday is observed annually by Muslims in Nigeria as an occasion for spiritual reflection and remembrance of the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

The declaration is attributed to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, with an official statement expected from the Ministry of Interior.

The occasion is expected to provide Muslim faithful across the country with an opportunity to reflect on values associated with the Prophet’s life, including compassion, humility, tolerance, peace and service to humanity.

The Federal Government has also encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and stability across the country, while promoting peaceful coexistence among citizens regardless of religious or ethnic differences.

Citizens have been urged to celebrate responsibly and respectfully, with emphasis on the values of mutual respect, compassion and national unity.

Eid-ul-Mawlid is observed on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal by Sunni Muslims, although the exact Gregorian date can vary depending on the Islamic lunar calendar and official determinations. In Nigeria, August 25, 2026, is currently listed as the public holiday for the occasion.

The Federal Government is expected to use the occasion to reiterate its commitment to protecting lives and property while promoting peace and peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.
