“Messi Is On Another Planet” — Jay Jay Okocha Has Finally Picked a Side, and Nigerians Have Thoughts

The GOAT debate never sleeps, and this time it’s Nigerian football royalty settling the score. On a podcast sit-down with former Super Eagles captain Obi Mikel, Jay Jay Okocha was finally asked the question everyone eventually gets asked: “Messi or Ronaldo?” His answer didn’t leave much room for interpretation: “Messi for me. Ronaldo is special, but Messi is on another planet. He’s art, born to play football.”

Not a New Position For Him

If you thought this was a spontaneous take, think again Okocha has been remarkably consistent on this exact question for years. Back in August 2024, he told Capital FM: “I think both of them rightly deserve to be GOATs, but I prefer Messi. As for me… I mean… Cristiano Ronaldo is typical of what you can achieve with hard work, but for Messi, everything comes naturally… and he works hard as well.”

So this latest comment with Obi Mikel isn’t a new revelation it’s Okocha simply reaffirming a stance he’s held publicly for at least two years, just with even more poetic phrasing this time around.

Why Okocha’s Opinion Actually Carries Weight

This isn’t just any pundit weighing in Okocha’s own résumé makes his perspective genuinely worth listening to. Regarded as one of the most gifted footballers Nigeria and Africa has ever produced, Okocha captained the Super Eagles through a career that included spells at Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Hull City. He won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and helped Nigeria claim Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996, earning worldwide admiration for his flair at PSG and beyond. When a player of that caliber someone celebrated specifically for his own technical gifts and creativity calls another player “art,” it hits differently than the usual fan debate.

He’s Not Alone in Nigerian Entertainment Circles Right Now

Okocha’s comments land at an interesting moment, because the Messi-vs-Ronaldo debate has been especially loud among Nigerian celebrities lately. Just weeks earlier, Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy stunned fans by sidestepping the Messi-Ronaldo debate entirely, telling ESPN: “I will say Jay Jay Okocha. It is between him and Pele. I am not doing that Ronaldo or Messi stuff,” effectively naming Okocha himself as his GOAT pick over both global superstars. Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has also weighed in on the debate on the Beast Mode podcast, adding his own name to a growing list of Nigerian sporting and entertainment figures publicly picking sides.

Interestingly, fans have long argued the reverse comparison too debating whether Okocha’s own dazzling skill and trickery during his playing days actually rivals Messi’s, with some insisting the Nigerian legend was every bit as magical in his prime.

Wahala Network Take

When a man whose entire career was built on making defenders look silly calls someone else “art,” you sit up and listen. Whether you’re Team Messi, Team Ronaldo, or firmly in the “just let us enjoy both” camp, Okocha just added serious weight to one side of this eternal argument.

The debate isn’t dying anytime soon. Where do you stand?
